Adokiye Kyrian is a beautiful up and coming songstress. The fair-complexioned lady spoke with The Octopus on her life as a musician, the misgivings on her supposed nude picture, her style and many more.

A lot of people see you more as a model than a songstress. Tell us about this other side of you?

I believe that my life as an artiste should take more precedence over my modelling career. I am a musician; I do Afro Pop, the deep rooted version. I got into music a long time ago and I have been trying to make success out of the career by working real hard.

What are you working on presently?

Currently, I am working on the promotion of a new single titled Love You Better. It is a song which features Addiction. It was released on Friday, March 29, on my birthday.

How did your passion for music begin?

Music has always been a part of me; it is something that I had always known I was going to do. Sometimes you want to get into something but you need to want it first; it has to be a priority. My romance with music began in my university days. I was a member of a group called The Maze. It had four members and I was the only lady. It was made up of MP, Adokiye, Snoop and Effect. We were doing music together before we graduated. After school, we still met to talk about music, school, what we were going to do over time and how we would do it. After school, I did a couple of things before I decided it was time to go into music as a professional and that was how I started. Till date, music is what has been keeping me going and it is the reason I am where I am today.

So you dumped your group and went solo?

It wasn’t like I dumped the group. We existed while in school, so it was not like I left them. We started there and it ended there. It was after school I thought of getting everything started again, but this time as a solo artiste. My music at the moment is a process and it is going to get better. I am just going to keep working hard till I get to my destination.

After your first single titled Baby Baby, featuring Olamide, you went off the radar. What happened?

The life of an up and coming artiste is not an easy one. It is strange when you are on your own doing something for the first time. After that single, people needed to accept me as the source of the music because I had never been there before and they needed to feel my presence by listening to the music. The period you are referring to was when I had to sit down after the first single and analyse what my fans wanted from me, how I should give it to them and the other question that involve making good music. It was a period to work toward the acceptability of the brand, Adokiye.

You seem to be a sucker for love songs. Are you romantic?

Love is good and beautiful. The love of God, the love of what we share, I think it is good because at the end of the day, if you look at things critically, you will find that the only thing keeping us alive is love. I believe it is part of us and we should get used to it.

After a string of successful singles, when will the album drop?

The album is not something I would want to talk about presently but we are working. Basically, what we are focusing on now is singles. We are trying to get across to people, interpret new songs and build a serious fan base. It is not easy when you are an up and coming artiste, but so far, so good.

Which artistes motivate you?

People like Lauren Hill and Bob Marley motivate me. I also love 2face and D’ Banj. I look up to them.

What else do you do beside music?

Presently, I am working on two fronts. I am doing music and if the modelling job comes, I do it too. As time goes on, I might just find myself doing something more. Presently, I am doing what I can do to make my musical career a success. Modelling is something I can decide I want to do but for now, music is the main thing. I just want to interpret music for people who love good songs.

Are you signed on any label?

Yes, I have a contract with GHP Records. GHP means Gold Heart Production. I was signed in January this year.

Record labels are known not to deliver on promises. Have you been a victim of such circumstance?

I don’t want to talk about that because it is something that is common. Whatever the record label wants to give to its artiste is its business. It is simply a label and artiste thing and it is personal.

What is your fashion style?

I go with the flow. I am more of a vintage girl. I dress glamorous when I need to, I appear casual when I have to and when I need to dress loud I do. I like colours and I am attracted to fabrics too.

You seem to be an advocate of the principle that if you’ve got it, you flaunt it. Am I right?

Of course, if you’ve got it, you flaunt it. If your slimness brings out your sexiness, then why not flaunt it and if it is your dark complexion, then you have every right to show people it is what makes you unique.

You have an attraction for bum shorts; is it because you have cute legs?

I don’t know if I have cute legs, but I know I like to wear bum shorts.

How do you handle the men your sexiness attracts?

I like to think if you are a female singer, single and you are sexy, it is only natural that you would be attracted to men. It is just a normal thing because men will always be around beautiful women.

Are you in a relationship presently?

I am single, but I am not searching.

Do you look at the label when you are picking a dress?

I am a freak for labels when it comes to perfumes, but because Nigerian and African designers are doing well nowadays, I try to patronise what we are doing here. I pick my fabrics here and for perfume, I choose from the names I know. These days I just mix them all up.

There was a story about you posing nude for a magazine. What was it all about?

I really don’t want to talk about it because that is not my focus.

But don’t you think you should clear the confusion created by the story?

My main focus is to promote my songs now. I don’t understand why a picture I took is becoming such an issue. They said I posed nude and that I was paid to do it but that is not true. I wasn’t naked, I didn’t pose nude. It was like wearing a bikini and a pant to swim. It is a normal thing, like you are having a beach party with a lot of girls wearing bikini and the guys wearing swimming trunks. I didn’t take off my bikini and I wore what any other person could have worn. So, I don’t understand the whole thing about posing nude. Frankly, I don’t understand it. There are models who show off everything from their front to their back and every other part that they are not supposed to show. I can’t ask them not to work. I can’t criticise them for doing what they do because it is their business. If I say a model should not pose one way or the other, then I too should not sing as a musician, and the actor should not act. That is my position on the picture issue. Often times, I wonder where the rumour about the nude photo came from.

What is the nature of your relationship with Ike Ogbonna?

He is just a friend, but we are really close.

Is there a romantic relationship between the two of you?

Not at all, we have a relationship that is similar to what a brother and a sister share.

You seem to have a special interest in cars. Why?

I don’t know, but I am aware of my love for cars.

Is there a probability that you would act in a movie some day?

Acting is one skill I have naturally and as time goes on, I will do some other jobs. If the job comes from the movie industry I will do it, why not. However, presently music is what I want to focus on.

As a lady who hopes to act in the near future, which Nollywood actor are you attracted to?

I think they are all doing well. The industry has also improved compared to the way it was two years ago. Producers are doing better movies now and our actors are interpreting their roles better. Overall, we are getting there.
