In his early days in the Senate, Senator Gbenga Ashafa was quit ambitious.

Having been elected from Lagos East into the 7th National Assembly, Senator Ashafa, the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development had dreams to see a better Lagos State.

Having held a similar office as Executive Secretary, Lagos State Land Use and Allocation Committee and subsequently Permanent SecretaryLagos State Lands Bureau, the thought that Lagos State would benefit a lot from his new office was a popular one.

At some point, Senator Ashafa did impress, as he advocated for the revamp of the Third Mainland Bridge, saying that Nigerians were at risk due to the underwater condition of the bridge.

While he never got his desire, Senator Ashafa became the man who drew attention to the supposed worsening condition of the bridge.

All these were past glory for him as the Senator appears to have slowed down in recent times. Asides holding town hall meetings with market women, advising associations to sponsor bills, allegedly calling Nigerian youths drug addicts and analyzing the importance of certain bills not much has been heard of him.

This, some people has attributed to the stress of the job and his age. At 62, Senator Ashafa definitely can’t deliver like a bubbly and enthusiastic young man.
