Why Globacom dumped Glo Naija sings for X-Factor

Globacom might be a leading indigenous telecommunication outfit, however when it comes to youth programme management, the company and its stewards lack the foresight to deliver.

The captains anchoring the youth segment in the Mike Adenuga-led company can simply be equated to blind men trying to lead one another across an express way; or how else does one explain the fact that having invested millions of naira as the sponsor of the music reality show Glo Naija Sings, the communication outfit suddenly decided to pack their bags and baggage’s and waived bye to it only to replace it with X-Factor.

While no reasonable explanation was given for their action, information pieced together by www.theoctopusnews.com revealed that when the reality show Naija Sings was presented to Glo, Adenuga welcomed it, as for him, it is a an opportunity for his organization to compete with the MTN-sponsored Project Fame West Africa.

However, when the first and second editions of the show held, and they did not get the response the sponsors of the show had projected, they thought a little extra touch here and there would do the magic, but unfortunately it did not work as expected.

www.theoctopusnew.com learnt that Adenuga was highly disappointed in the development and the project executor that he told one of the big boys in his company to make sure they don’t come in contact again or else he would lose his job. He also insisted that the sponsorship of the show be stopped. However, to prevent the organization from losing face in view of the fact that other newly setup telecommunication outfits such as Etisalat, Airtel were still sponsoring reality shows, it was agreed that the company will bring in a new music reality show with international name and pedigree; hence they purchased the franchise of X Factor.

While the race to see what the new show would look like continues, observers of the development are already saying what becomes of the Glo Naija Sings would be what would happen to the new project.

According to Omobolanle Ishola, an ardent follower of music reality shows, “the problem is not with the concept, it is with the executors. There has to be extra incentive that would attract people to watch the show and that is what Glo Naija Sings lacks”.

Bello Dan Musa was of the opinion that the newly-introduced X Factor would eventually be thrown out of the window like Glo Naija Sings as the main objective which is to counter Project Fame West would fail again, just as it did with Glo Naija Sings.

As it stands, if the newly introduced show fails to meet up to the expectations of its sponsors by giving Project Fame West Africa a run for its money, it would have been unanimously agreed that Globacom’s youth segment is full of clueless men and women who lack any sense of direction.

It will be recalled that the now popular Who Wants to be a Millionaire show was first presented to Globacom, but it was turned it down due to the same lack of foresight. The programme was later presented to MTN who are its current sponsors and it has since garnered massive fans.
