With the 2023 elections drawing near, there have been questions about who will head the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the electoral body in Nigeria.

This poser follows the near expiration of the tenure of the current INEC boss, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The tenure of Professor Yakubu who was appointed as INEC Chairman on 21 October 2015, succeeding Amina Zakari, expires on Monday, November 9, along with five other INEC commissioners.

Presently, there are reports that there is an underground battle about who will emerge as the next chairman of the INEC.

It is however unclear if Professor Yakubu’s tenure would be renewed by President Buhari or not. If it is, he would be the first INEC chairman to have a second term.

Interestingly, the presidency has downplayed the anxiety over the INEC boss tenure, adding that there is still time to take action on the matter.
