The Ogun State Government has commended Promasidor Nigeria Limited for initiating a career guidance workshop for secondary school students, describing it as a laudable effort towards the development of education and youth empowerment in the country.

Speaking at the second edition of Promasidor Harness Your Dream programme, organised by the makers of Cowbell, Milk, Loya Milk, Onga, Top Tea and other quality brands, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Modupe Mujota called on other corporate organisations to emulate Promasidor since education and youth development are collective responsibilities of the government and the populace in line with public and private partnership policy.

The Commissioner, who was represented at the event, held at African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta, on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Director of Education Support Services, Mr Martins Akinsolu, remarked that most adolescents are ignorant of career choices. “It would not be an overstatement to state that the most bugging problem facing the adolescents of this country is the problem of unemployment and the major cause of this problem is wrong choice of career,” she lamented.

In a separate interview, Akinsolu described Promasidor Harness Your Dream as “the first of its kind in Ogun State”, adding that the Ministry would seek further support from the company to enable the over 450 secondary schools in the state benefit from the initiative.

The Principal of African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta, Mr Akinjide Johnson was particularly delighted that Promasidor Nigeria Limited had chosen to support the future of Nigerian youths rather than devote resources to sponsor programmes he described as “promoting frivolities.”

In his opening remarks, the Managing Director, Priomasidor Nigeria Limited, Mr. Anders Einarsson admonished the students to take full advantage of the workshop in order to achieve their dream goals. Einarsson, who was represented by the company’s Head of Legal/PR, Mr. Andrew Enahoro, described success as not just what is hoped and prayed for.

He then explained: “You choose to be successful and work hard towards achieving it. That you are here today means you have chosen to be successful in your future endeavours. What remains is for you to continue to study and work hard to achieve the desired results. Paying attention to the presentations that will be made this afternoon, for me, is what you must do if you are really determined to be successful. Beyond today, however, I implore you to embrace learning as a lifelong process. This is one decision you will never regret taking.”

Einarsson said that Promasidor remained committed to education and youth development through such initiatives as Promasidor Harness Your Dream and the Cowbellpedia Mathematics TV Quiz Show, through which the company has promoted interest in Mathematics in the last 20 years.

He recalled that Promasidor doubled the cash prizes for winners and runners of the popular TV Quiz programme from this year’s edition, while sustaining the overseas education excursion for the two category winners. “The competition perfectly demonstrates how far we are ready to go in supporting you to harness and achieve your dreams,” Einarsson further said.

The focus areas of this edition were “Personnel Management/Emerging Entrepreneurial Opportunities”, “Accounting and Business Management, “Digital Media” and “Information and Communication Technology.”

Students of Gateway Secondary School, Abeokuta were also in attendance to benefit from the programme.

A Corporate Social Responsibility of Promasidor Nigeria Limited, the primary objective of ‘Promasidor Harness Your Dreams, is to help public school students understand varieties of career options and guide them along their career paths with PNG staff members serving as resource persons.

It is to be held across the country with one edition per school term.

CAN Calls For Removal Of Tanko Muhammad As CJN

Published

on

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for the removal of Tanko Muhammad as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

This follows his call for the amendment of the constitution to accomodate more aspects of the Shari’a law.

Muhammad urged academics to champion the cause of redesigning the methods of teaching Shari’a law, while pointing out that implementation of his suggestions would be more feasible if universities give the Shari’a law its own faculty.

Hiwever, reacting to the comment credited to the CJN, CAN raised an alarm of a plan to islamize Nigeria and backed its claim by pointing out that the President’s recent appointment was in favour of a certain religion.

The Christian group also called for the removal of Tanko and the Chief Justice of Nigeria over the comment it described as reprehensible, reckless and insensitive.

According to the CAN, the CJN is religiously compromised and no longer trustworthy in the dispensation of justice.

A statement by CAN President, His Eminence, Rev Dr. Samson Ayokunle which issued by his Special Assistant (Media & Communications) Pastor Adebayo Oladeji reads:

“Our attention has been drawn to the advocacy of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed for the amendment of the Constitution with a view to adding more Sharia contents.

“Justice Muhammed reportedly made the call while declaring open the 20th Annual Judges Conference at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria Faculty of Law’s Moot Court.

“We have not seen the full text of the paper presented and we learnt the Chief Justice was represented at the event. So, it is difficult to know if the speech was that of the Chief Justice or his representative.

“We don’t believe that such a reckless and provocative statement could be made by the number one judicial officer in the country. How could the CJN say ‘We as Muslims have the numbers to amend the constitution’? It is not possible. It is either he was misquoted outright or quoted out of context.

“Asking for constitutional amendment with a view to adding more to the Sharia contents is ill-timed, provocative and unacceptable. Was the Chief Justice of Nigeria put there deliberately for the promotion of Islamic matters or to be unbiased and fair judge for all irrespective of religion? It appears from this statement (if he made it) that he was put there for Islamisation agenda.

“Those in government are warned not to use the cheap popularity or acceptance they seek to set two religious practitioners against each other.

“This type of statement, if true, is enough for the President of the country to initiate the removal of this Chief Justice from office. He is religiously biased and partisan. We have no more confidence in him. And we once again reiterate our advocacy for religious balanced in the appointments that are being made by the President.

“Lopsided appointments are direct contradictions to some portions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). These include but not limited to Sections 10, 13 (3-4), 15 (2) (d) and (4). It is widely believed that no country survives two civil wars. Our leaders should be mindful of the complexities of the people they are leading.

“There have been Presidents, who are Christians. During their time, there was never a time they promoted their religion at the expense of others. Our leaders should stop paying lip service to the unity and peace of the country.

“Do we take it that what he said is the official position of this regime on inter-faith relations? Why has no one in leadership, either, the Executive or Legislative arm of government taken him up on it? The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is eagerly awaiting the rebuttal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria on the unfortunate and unguarded utterances that can provoke a religious crisis in the country.”

FG Orders Turkish Airlines To Suspend Operations Into Nigeria

Published

Turkish Airlines has been ordered to suspend its operations into Nigeria by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The directive came through the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The directive follows repeated cases of poor passenger treatment by the international carrier.

According to NCAA, the airline is expected to suspend its operations until it was ready to operate with the right size of aircraft that could transport all passengers with their baggage at the same time.

In recent times, there have been cases in which the airline failed to bring in passengers into Nigeria together with their checked-in baggage.

In a letter to the airline by the acting Director-General, NCAA, Capt. Abdullahi Sidi, which was made available by the Federal Ministry of Aviation in Abuja on Thursday, December 12th the authority expressed displeasure at the incidents, which it said had been going on for over two weeks.

Sidi said the incidents had become so bad that most recent Turkish Airlines flights arrived in Nigeria without more than 85 per cent of passengers’ baggage on board.

He said:

“Our airport authority has been facing a serious crisis controlling the passengers at the airport whenever they arrive without their baggage. This issue has made passengers to carry out several mob actions at our airports and it is a great threat to our airport facilities.

“In view of all these, and a series of meetings held with the Turkish Airlines personnel, which did not yield any solution to this problem, the NCAA is therefore left with no option than to direct Turkish Airlines to suspend its operations into Nigeria until such a time when the airline is ready to operate with the right size of aircraft that can transport all passengers with their baggage at the same time.

“If no remedial action is carried out by your airline, this suspension shall be effective from the 16th of December, 2019.”
