Annjay is an up and coming songstress. She spoke about her music and her kind of man in this interview with us.

How did you begin your music career?
I started singing at my early age. I started at the age of 12, at the Redeemed Christian Church. From there, I proceeded to contest in Nigerian Idol season one, but got dropped during the audition. I did not allow that to distract me because I decided would continue with my career and make something out of it.

Since then, how has it being for you musically?
It has being good. I progress everyday. Last year, to crown my effort, I won the award for the most outstanding up and coming musician
of the year. So, it has not been bad.

You started music as a member of the Redeemed Christian Church, one would have expected you to do gospel music instead of what you are doing now?
Well, the church gave me a free hand to do what I want. I started there and moved on. Redeemed changed me from being a shy lady to a full blown musician. The path I also took as a musician can be said to have been influenced by my father because he was a big fan of Fela. At a point, he was always wearing studs in his ears. So I think I take after my dad. I also need to tell you that there is this general perception that girls who do any genre of music besides gospel are bad girls. I don’t think that is true because the fact that I do my style of music doesn’t change the kind of girl I am. Specifically, I am a well trained girl and doing Hip hop, Rhythm and Blues does not change me.

So, what is your genre of music?
Basically, it is comfort. The kind of music you do should be based on your strength, and your comfort zone. If you are trying to do anything the way people like at the end of the day you will end up blaming yourself. So, doing secular music or not has not made me forget where I am coming from. Nevertheless, I can still do gospel music if need be, but my interest is secular it goes well with my skills.

What are the challenges that you face as an up and coming musician who is a Christian?
Basically, the challenges are sexual harassments. I have gone to shows where when it is my turn to perform you see an admirer who would go back stage and tell the anchor not to call you because you have turned his advances down. But the mistake they often make is that I am a strong willed person and no one can force into doing what I don’t want to do.

So as it is now have you been turning down a lot of people?
Not necessarily, but if I don’t like you I can’t be in a relationship with you. I have been sexually harassed, but I never gave in to the harasments from the person

Can you explain how it happened?
As a growing artiste, I was once called by somebody who considers himself a publicist and he told me to meet him somewhere if I wanted my career to blossom, but because I am close to my elder brother I told him and he took care of the situation.

How would you describe yourself?
I would say I am an easy going lady, friendly, but can be blunt if necessary. I don’t like people who try to take advantage of younger people.

You were recently in Kenya, what was the trip all about?
It was a show put together by one of the leading producers in the Kenyan entertainment industry and I was invited to come and perform there.

What was the experience like in Kenya?
It was great because I realised that people don’t really appreciate up and coming artistes in Nigeria, but in other countries, we are valued like diamond. The reception was beautiful. At a point people were asking my manager if I was high before going on stage.

Are you thinking of going back to Kenya soonest?
Yes, because we are working on collaborations with some of the most popular artistes in Kenya presently and we hope it will come out good.

You seem to love dressing wild, is this right?
Well, I love to dress gaga. It is rear for you to see me dressed in what the average girl is wearing except when I am at home. The Annjay who you see on stage is different from the one who is at home. I have several personalities.

Do you dress to attract male attention?
That I dress to look good does not mean that I want to attract men. The truth is that I enjoy dressing and what I wear has nothing to do with my faith or that I am not well brought up. It does not mean that I don’t fear God.

Men like pretty ladies because of the designs they put on, have you been getting compliments based on your stature?
Yes I have. The reality is that as long as you are pretty, men will always come after you. They have been coming. Male fans call me to express their feelings, even on FaceBook, the attention can be killing, but as a celebrity there is a way to behave. I have many male admirers. So, I often tell them to let me be. They will definitely come but as an artiste and as a person you should be able to handle them because show business is business and not all about men. So, it is important to know how to play your game not to upset your fans.

Sex helps in the entertainment industry, have you ever used your body to get help?
I have never done that. I can’t do it and I am against the people who do things like that. I was not brought up that way.

Being sexy on stage sell in the music industry, how far can you go when you are performing?
I can go very far. I dance and I enjoy it. So, I can be sexy on stage as to make my music sell and I want to do well in this business why won’t I dance sexy. Besides I have a big mirror in my apartment which I use to rehearse every morning.  So, I can really go far to get what I want.

Can you give a lap dance in a show as part of dancing sexy?
I can’t do that because I am not a stripper.

What extreme can you go in terms of your dress on stage?
I can wear anything as long as it is not a G string. I am just that kind of person. I try to please myself and not other people. And if anybody takes my picture that I put on funny cloths to my dad he would laugh it off because he knows the kind of person I am. My parents know everything about me and they know I have always been like that right from the start.

You seem to be distancing yourself from men, are you a lesbian?
No I am not. I have a man in my life I just don’t like talking about him in the public.

Can you briefly tell us about him?
He is a gentleman, he is respectful and he has the penchant for taking people as they are. He does not discriminate. He is almost a replica of my dad in terms of personality. My dad is a kind of person that accommodates people.

Are you in love with the person presently?
It is good to love, but you need to know that I still have lot things ahead of me. There is time for everything.

You have cute stature, what is the sexiest part of your body?
I like my boobs even if they are small
