For Victor Ochei, no condition is permanent

Certainly, there is no doubt that former Speaker, Delta House of Assembly, Engineer Victor Ochei, has fully understood the import of that Owelle of Onitsha, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s famous statement that “no condition is permanent,” a statement which the great Zik of Africa made in response to the then Governor of Eastern Region, Ukpabi Asika’s critical remarks on him. Why do we say so?

Ochei who goes by the name ‘speaker emeritus,’ was 46 years old last week and surprisingly, www.theoctopusnews.com counted only six pages of birthday wishes advert that were placed in newspapers in his honour. This was against the over 50 pages placed in the same paper by his associates and friends when he celebrated his 45th birthday. He was such a powerful speaker that in his time, the Assembly was referred to as the “most vibrant.” But all that has gone like a candle in the wind.

At a point, Ochie became so powerful that the mention of his name sent shivers through the spines of some of his colleagues including the executive arm of the government. Such was the situation that when he celebrated his birthday in 2014, his friends, associates and colleagues painted the pages of Newspapers red with adverts for days.

Interestingly, same cannot be said of Ochei’s 2015 birthday as some of those who were with him last year seemed to have deserted him. Next week, we will bring you what Delta North indigenes call “the many political sins of Ochei and his main rival, Barrister Peter Nwaoboshi.”
