It was a thrilling contest last weekend as representatives of the South-South states of Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa grabbed the last four slots in the on-going 2018 Cowbellpedia Mathematics Television Quiz Show, being sponsored by Cowbell Milk, the leading brand of Promasidor Nigeria Limited.


In the preliminary Group I challenge, Splendour Nwankwo, a student of the Jesuit Memorial College, Port Harcourt, Rivers State; and Beverly Ukoha of Topfaith International Secondary School, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State clinched the available two tickets.


Those who could not cross to that stage after the pulsating first and second rounds included Chidubem Okorie of the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos; and Okoli Beulah, a student of the Royal Girls Academy, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.


Others were Nazifa  Salisu Musa of  Iqra Science Academy, Jalingo, Taraba State; and Khali  Saeed from All Bright Kids Academy, Birni-Kebbi, Kebbi State.


With 120 points from the 60 Seconds of Fame segment, Splendour hinged his strength on the long hours he spends daily in practicing Mathematics, while Beverly, who aspires to become a Chemical Engineer, believes he has what it takes to win the ultimate prize.

In the senior category, Samuel Ebute of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State; and Victor Wariboko-West of Biedomo Premier School, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State dwarfed other contestants and pocketed the semi-final tickets in the group.


The feat therefore pushed Abdulazeez Abubakar of Iqra Science Academy, Jalingo, Taraba State; and Clement Isaiah of the Bilikisu International School, Kaduna, Kaduna State out of the competition. Other contestants in their league were Ahmed Ahmod of the Mhastar Probity College, Abeokuta, Ogun State and Yusuf Usman of Government Science Secondary School, Dutsin-ma, Katsina, Katsina State.


Victor is confident that the courage that brought him this far would see him through to the final to win the crown.


Samuel, on his part, vowed to make his parents proud by winning the ultimate prize and be crowned the 2018 champion.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Cowbell and Mathematics in Nigeria, this year’s prize money has been doubled as winners in both categories will receive N2 million each with an all-expense paid educational excursion outside the country, while the first and second runners-up will receive N1.5 million and N1 million respectively.


The teachers of the top prize winners will be awarded N500,000, while those of the first and second runners-up will receive N400,000 and N300,000 respectively.


Also, each of the winning schools will be presented with Mathematics textbooks, desktop computers and printers.


The 2018 Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools Mathematic TV Quiz continues this weekend. It will be aired to millions of viewers on DSTv Africa Magic Family Channel, AIT Network and other six television stations across the country.

Another Priest Escape Death In Enugu State




A Catholic Priest identified as Fr. Chimezie Ani escaped death in Enugu State after he was attacked by gunmen.

 Fr. Ani was attacked by gunmen at Ugwuomu Emene, a suburb of Enugu metropolis, late in the evening on Thursday.
Confirming the attack, Fr. Benjamin Achi,  spokesman of the Enugu Diocese of Catholic Church said the priest escaped his assilants without any injury.
Achi said the gunmen were firing at an SUV jeep when the priest ran into them in his car
According to him, a haul of bullets hit the car of the priest but he escaped unhurt.

Police Arrest Killers Of Fr. Offu

The suspected killers of Enugu Catholic Priest, Fr. Paul Offu have been arrested by the police.
They were paraded at the Enugu State Police Headquarters on Friday.
According to the police, the suspects were identified as Ibrahim Adamu (25 yrs) from Taraba State and Idris Tobe (25 yrs).
Three other suspects, Garba Basulugu, Mohammed Lagu and Mojunpan Duna, were said  to be at large.
Fr. Offu was killed in Agbudu, Awgu LGA, Enugu State on August 1.
Briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters in Enugu on Friday, Sulaiman Balarabe, the Commissioner of Police, said two of the suspected killers of Fr. Offu were arrested in different locations at Abia and Benue State.
Balarabe said the police were trailing the remaining three suspects at large.
He said the suspects were also behind the kidnap of a traditional ruler, Igwe Sunday of Agbogugu town and his wife on August 4.

Seized Properties: Former Governor Yari Drags EFCC To Court



A former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, has dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to court.

Yari prayed the Federal High Court Abuja, to direct the EFCC to unseal his property located at Maitama, Abuja.

In an exparte motion brought by his Counsel, Mahmud Magaji, (SAN), he said the EFCC sealed the property contrary to the provision of the law. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the the Federal High Court Abuja had, earlier in the day, granted the ICPC leave to freeze some funds in Yari’s Zenith and Polaris Bank. Magaji, who said that the application was to ensure each government agencies operates within the confines of the law, urged the judge to invoke his power to direct the EFCC to remove the red inscription pasted on the house.”


The former Zamfara governor said the EFCC has no right to seize his property without a court order.

He said the application was supported by 11-paragraph affidavit and also supported by a written address dated Aug. 16. ”We adopt same in urging your Lordship to grant our application as prayed,” he said.

The counsel argued that in as much as the applicant did not intend to prevent any government agency from performing its function, due process of the law must be followed in carrying out such duty. ”We urge your Lordship to direct parties to maintain status quo pending the determination of the suit,” Magaji said.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, who ordered that the case be heard during the vacation period, however adjourned the matter till August 19 for ruling.

Yari is being accused of allege corruption in his capacity as governor of Zamfara state.
