This year’s edition of Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), tagged AFRIMA 2016 has been declared open.

The event was declared open by the Head of Culture, African Union Commission, Ms. Angela Martins.

With the unveiling, music practitioners all over Africa can now submit entries for screening between Monday, May 30 and Saturday, July 30.

However, amidst the unveiling are the quagmire of the 2015 edition of the show, as music pundits ask if they will not recur.

In 2015, attendees of the event were plagued by dilemma of lack of proper organisation, as a lot of guests with VIP and VVIP passes ended up sitting at slots located for regulars.

Asides this, there were other issues, as dancers used for the show lamented their not being paid promptly. With tears in their eyes, sweat all over their body, they begged to be paid for a job already done.

The event was also plagued with a lack of established music names, as had been witnessed the year before leaving rooms for speculations such as the inability of the organisers of the award to deliver year-in-year-out.

Also of note was the fact that almost all the winners of awards on the night ended up performing giving the impression that they were being made to deliver on the award they had received.

Needless to say that the organisers of the awards left many pondering on the winners of some categories. How did Dipanda win Song Writer of the Year category ahead of Wizkid who’s “Ojuelegba” was a hit all over Africa?

Pundits are seeking to know how the President and Executive Producer of AFRIMA, Mr. Mike Dada and his team plan to surmount these hurdles in this edition even as a less political award is what is being anticipated.
