Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the Secret Service in America has resigned.
This follows the assassination attempt against ex-President Donald Trump that led to an outcry regarding the failure of the service in its core mission.
Cheatle was appointed Secret Service director in August 2022.
However, there have been calls for her to resign amidst investigations over how the shooter was able to get close to the Republican presidential nominee at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” she said in an email to staff, obtained by The Associated Press. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.”
Meanwhile, Cheatle’s departure is not likely to end the scrutiny of the Secret Service after the failures of July 13.
