Nigeria’s Minister for Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye has come under serious attack following a below-expectation empowerment programme.

Following the launch of the programme in Abuja, Nigerians took to social media to react to the release of 30 tricycles and sewing machines by the Minister.

Ohanenye, took to her X handle on Tuesday night, November 7, to announce that the tricycles and sewing machines will be released to women to empower them, as part of her women empowerment scheme.

While speaking to newsmen, the Minister who was excited by her initiative said that this will reduce nagging in homes as women will be able to feed their husbands and children and also be able to save some money.

Nigerians react as Minister for Women Affairs rolls out tricycles and sewing machines for women empowerment programme

On her X handle, she wrote;

‘’In practical fulfilment of my earlier resolve to reduce the rate of unemployment and also to ensure sustainable empowerment of women is the Introduction of the Pink Riders Transport Scheme and upgrade of our sewing factory.

“Today, I received the first batch of branded Tricycles and industrial sewing machines.

“The pilot scheme of these machines especially the Pink Riders will start from Abuja before we extend to other states. This is an era of walking our talks because Nigeria must succeed.”

Since the empowerment, Nigerians have been reacting on taking to social media, with many berating the Minister for thinking of tricycles and sewing machines as means to empower women.

Most reactions are that there are better ways to empower women than giving them tricycles and sewing machines.
