Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate in the 2019 election has reacted to the celebration of Nigeria’s 60th independence.

Speaking on the state of the nation in his independence anniversary message, Abubakar called on the federal and state governments to release all political prisoners.

Atiku who spoke via a series of tweets shared on his official Twitter page on Thursday, October 1,  said Nigeria’s future depends on the commitment of everyone to a common destiny.

While urging the government to discontinue the prosecution of such individuals, Atiku added that if late Nelson Mandela could reconcile with those who imprisoned him, we can do the same.

He tweeted: “As such, in the spirit of our 60th Independence Anniversary, I call on the Federal and state governments, to release all political prisoners and detainees, and discontinue the prosecution of such individuals. If Nelson Mandela could reconcile with those who imprisoned him for twenty-seven years, we can reconcile with those who have disagreed with us.”
