An indigenous youth group, Ohanaeze Youth Assembly (OYA), has called for the retention of the current service chiefs.

The group made their position on the issue known after Governor David Umahi held the same position, advising President Buhari not to listen to the call for their sack.

Governor Umahi had explained that rather than sack the service chiefs, an increase of their funding and better logistics be made to aid their performance rather than contemplating to relieve them of their duties.

Umahi while noting this praised the Army for their gallantry and dedication, adding that their assignment was not an easy task. He added that the Army needed the full cooperation of Nigerians at all levels to succeed.

A statement signed by the president of OYA, Henry Chukwuemeka Udeh, on Saturday, August 8, stated that Umahi’s counsel represents the popular view of Nigerians.

“We, as a group, see his commendation of the Chief of Army Staff who he described as a very big committed person, and very friendly with the civil society as apt and his assurance to partner with the Chief of Army Staff as in order,” the statement read in part.

There has been a continuous call for the sack of the service chief who appears to have lost the zeal to battle major challenges affecting the security of the country.

Recall that senators on Tuesday, July 21, asked the president to sack the nation’s service chiefs and also called for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu.

The lawmakers made the demands in their respective contributions to the discussion on the security situation in the country during plenary. The senators said the service chiefs should be replaced since they do not have new ideas in fighting insecurity, adding that the top hierarchy of the military should brief its relevant committees on the factors militating against its operations to find a way forward.
