An ex-spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Sani Usman, has refuted speculations that troops now fish and farm in the northeast region of Nigeria.
Brigadier Usman reacted to the speculation during an interview session, commending the Nigerian military for quickly investigating the claim.
According to him, the military must be applauded for rising up to the occasion by expeditiously investigating such an allegation. He said a board of inquiry spearheaded by a major general has come out with its findings and rubbished those allegations.
His words: “Realistically, agriculture takes time. The fringes are littered with IEDs and as at today, the troops detonated 17 such IEDs. What time do they have to engage in such? More so, there is no population to help them.”
Attributing the allegations to some overzealous security operatives eager to pass information to their superiors without verification or reaching out to their colleagues on the ground, Usman said the such should be discountenanced.
