A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State have been given a waiver ahead of the 2023 general election.
All Progressive Congress (APC) gave the new defectors the waiver to be able to contest elections on its platform.
The waiver was given at an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, December 8.
Umahi and Dogara will not have to wait for a number of years before being qualified to vie for any elective office.
Information about the wiaver was disclosed to State House correspondents in Abuja by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Governor El-Rufai while speaking said: “The second resolution is that NEC has approved the granting of waivers to persons who have recently joined the party members and those desirous of joining the party in the nearest future.
“By this, such new members will enjoy all the benefits and privileges accruable by virtue of their membership of the party.
“So, they will be able to contest for positions in the party. They will be able to contest elections without any requirement of being members for a number of years or period of time.”
According to the presidential aide on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, those present at the meeting include President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, and Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.
