Perhaps for the first time in his career, Yung6ix’s point of view on rap music has been supported.
Those who had expected the rapper to be slammed for saying he only listens to his songs and those of South African rappers when he wants to listen to rap music have been disappointed.
Rather than criticise Yung6ix, the rapper has been commended, as fans of rap music and even rapper Terry Tha Rapman agree the genre is all but dead.
Reacting to Yung6ix comment, Terry Tha Rapman said, “I kind of get where he’s coming from. I’ve been stressing this for long, when I said ‘rap is dead’ in Nigeria I didn’t mean nobody is rapping. I meant the fans, media and promoters have stopped supporting rap music as it should be at a point.’
He continued, “Now would you blame rappers for fine-tuning their style? Rappers hardly get the airplay and support as our pop counterparts so after years we started adapting. I still believe there’s hope. We are far from the days of Trybesmen, 2shotz, Ruggedman, Modenine and when MI dropped Talk About It and MI2. We need more rap concerts to promote hip-hop culture. The few ones I’ve been to were not encouraging.”
Artistes such as Falz The Bad Guy, Olamide, Phyno, Zoro, Ogaboss Illi, Cdq, Reminensce are some of the rap acts who have kept the genre going.
However, in Yung6ix estimation they are not living up to expectations.
