Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele has stated that the actions of Senator Abdul Ningi regarding the 2024 budget can be tantamount to a civilian coup.

He spoke on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, March 12, adding that Senator Ningi was trying to remove the Senate President by using the northern senators.

Recall that Senator Ningi had granted an interview to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC Hausa Service) in which he said that the Federal Government was operating two different budgets. He also stated that the 2024 budget had been padded with three trillion.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Bamidele noted that he was not speaking as the leader of the Senate, but in his capacity as a Senator who was elected by his people.

Further, he noted that it has been over 40 years since the South-South occupied the office of the Senate President, adding that Senator David Mark spent eight peaceful years as Senate President and Senator Bukola Saraki wasn’t impeached for what he did, however, some people don’t want Akpabio to have a second term as Senate President, hence their action.

Senator Bamidele subsequently urged the Senate President to proceed with the pleas in the motion moved by Senator Olamilekan Solomon regarding the investigation of the allegation of budget padding.
