Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti has apologised to senior lawyer Femi Falana over his role in the Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan (VDM) audio saga.

Stating that he never meant to offend or disrespect the lawyer who was his father’s lawyer, the singer added that VDM only told him about the controversial audio by mouth as he didn’t listen to it. According to him, he has no input in what social critic, VDM shares on social media, as the social activist never listens to anyone and does whatever he feels is right.

Interestingly, his comment differs from what Kuti had initially said when VDM posted the audio initially. Then, Seun Kuti said online that VDM informed him of the controversial audio tape and that he told him to release it.

The controversy surfaced after VDM released an audio on Tuesday, September 24 in which he alleged that Bobrisky told an unknown person that he paid operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) fifteen million naira to drop money laundering charges against him.

In the same audio, Bobrisky also told the person that he didn’t spend his jail term in prison, but in a luxury apartment outside the correctional centre. He also said that he spoke with Falz in prison and that Falz and his dad, Femi Falana, SAN, tried to get him a presidential pardon in exchange for N10 million.

Analysising the audio, VDM expressed disgust at Falz and his father for associating with Bobrisky and even asked if Falz ‘dey do’, a comment many assumed was questioning Falz’s sexual orientation.

Clearing the air on the audio, Kuti said,

‘’I wasn’t conniving and I did not have any ulterior motive because I am the one that still came out to say he told me before he said it. If I was the one pushing him, I would never have come out to say he told me. I would have been in the shadow. The matter did not concern me and I told him to go and say what he wants to say.

“I am sorry deeply if that offended Uncle Femi., It is really not my intention. I will not in any way, shape or form want to join anybody even VDM to fight Uncle Femi Falana. We have been through a lot. We have come a long way. Left to me, the one that matters to me is the institutional lapses of EFCC taking money to drop money laundering charge. I will never join issues with anybody to try and denigrate, insult or defame.

Further, he said,

‘’When people are talking and involving me in VDM’s post, am I VDM’s producer? Does he write what he wants to say to me for approval? This thing is surprising to me. In fact, I did not know that when he was going to do his video, he would ad the innuendos…that’s his style. He did not tell me he was going to do all that. Even if I tell him do not do it, he would have done it.”

Furthermore, the singer said even with Falz, he did the best that he could do to resolve the issue between the singer and VDM.

“If two people I take as younger brothers, it is not in my place to take sides. I told him immediately to call Falz to try and sought it out within yourselves. Left to me I would love to see an amicable ending. But if that is not the issue, I would not now come outside publicly to start taking sides between the two of them. That means I am escalating things”

Kuti also said that he told VDM that Falz did not like the innuendoes he used against him when analyzing the purported audio.
