The appointment, which took effect from April 9, 2026, was conveyed in an official letter dated April 10, 2026, issued by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

In the letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Cosmas Iwu, the governor said the appointment was in recognition of Owuamalam’s capacity to drive policies and programmes aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDGs, adopted in 2015, provide a global framework for ending poverty, protecting the environment, and ensuring peace and prosperity for all by 2030.

In her new role, Owuamalam will advise the governor on strategies to advance the SDGs across key sectors, including health, education, poverty reduction, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.

She is also expected to coordinate partnerships with development agencies, civil society organisations, and the private sector to accelerate the implementation of the global goals within the state.

The appointment reflects the Uzodimma administration’s commitment to integrating the SDGs into governance, with a focus on inclusive growth and improved quality of life for residents.

The role of Special Adviser on SDGs has become increasingly significant as subnational governments intensify efforts to localise the global development agenda and meet internationally agreed targets.

With her appointment, Owuamalam is expected to play a key role in aligning Imo State’s policies with global best practices while ensuring measurable impact at the grassroots level.

The government expressed confidence in her ability to deliver on the mandate and contribute meaningfully to the state’s development objectives.

Owuamalam is a lawyer with over 14 years post-call experience and a strong background spanning the energy, policy, government, and financial sectors. She holds a Master’s degree in Oil and Gas Law with distinction from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom, and previously worked at the Central Bank of Nigeria headquarters in Abuja.

She is also an advocate for the SDGs and a humanitarian focused on girl-child development. She is a member of several professional bodies, including the International Bar Association (IBA), African Bar Association (ABA), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
