Top Dignitaries Honour First City Monument Bank’s Founder; Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun In Tribute***Photos

The caliber of individuals at a man’s event goes a long way in describing his personality. If the concern is deceased, the saying becomes more apt.

Such is the case of the late founder of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Group, Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun.

Otunba Balogun died at the age of 89 in London, United Kingdom (UK), on May 18, and will be buried on Saturday, July 8.

A man of many successes, a tribute organized in his memory at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos on Tuesday, July 4th was an all comers event filled with notable Nigerians including industrialist Rasaq Okoya and wife Shade, businessman Tony Elumelu and wife Awele, and former Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

It was the same atmosphere on Wednesday, July 5, when a service of songs and wake keep was held in honour of the late colossus at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Until his death, the late Otunba Balogun was the ‘Olori Ebi’ and head of all the princes at the Arojojoye Ruling House in Ijebu Ode.

He also held several revered traditional and cultural titles including Otunba Tunwase, the Olori Omo-Oba of Ijebu, Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians, Baba Oba of Ijebu-Ife, Asalu-Oba of Ijebu Mushin among others.

Upon speculation of the death of the business mogul, a confirmation statement was released and signed by the duo of Bolaji and Jide Balogun, on behalf of the family,

The statement read; “With a heavy heart but with gratitude and total submission to the will of the Almighty God, we announce the passing of our Patriarch and the Founder of FCMB, Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun, CON, The Olori Omo Oba Akile Ijebu and Asiwaju of ljebu Christians, who passed away, following a very brief illness, at the age of 89 years, in the evening of Thursday 18th May 2023, in London, United Kingdom, surrounded by his family.

“While we mourn his passing, we are grateful for the full life he lived and the legacy of hard work, entrepreneurship, excellence, tenacity, courage, faith, style, discipline, along with his commitment to God, to Church, to family, community, philanthropy and Nigeria, which he has left for us, to emulate.

“We are comforted in our loss by the remarkable outpouring of love and sympathy, all your kind words and the effusive expressions of warmth.
Books of condolence will be open from 11 am on Monday, 22nd May 2023, at his homes in Lagos and ljebu Ode, and at the following offices:
