Now that the selection of Oba in Yoruba land, is no longer by divination ‘Ifa Oracle’, but by election, I hope we won’t have another Tribunal petition in the royal palaces?
The announcement of the Akarigbo of Remo-elect, Prince Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, LLB, LLM bewildered my imagination.
What is the Royal houses turning into in Yoruba land? First, it was a royal separation between the supposed leader of Yoruba kings, Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi and his estranged queen, Olori Wuraola Zaynab. The first royal divorce since my over three decades existence on Nigeria -earth. I stand to be corrected please.
A Queen that is expected to serve as mother of all and display an exemplary role as an epitome to motherhood, was sent packing from the ‘ancestral’ palace over alleged infidelity and disregard for the Royal Father. What a shame!
Second, was an affront by a sitting governor in Yoruba land who hand picked 22 beaded chiefs and make them Kings, at the expense of a royal king who is the highest traditional ruler of the land and traditionally vested with the power to recommend and upgrade village chief to a crownship King. But what do we have today? Impunity and disregard for traditions and Royal laws.
Now, we have an Oba-elect in Ogun state, from Remoland under Sagamu local government who was chosen by electoral process.
According to a media report, the Oba-elect, Prince Adewale who is to fill the vacant stool of the late Akarigbo of Remo, was declared winner having scored the highest votes in an election conducted among the palace chiefs.
With this electoral ‘selection’, I hope we won’t be having impeachment notices in the palace soon, as some factional chiefs not loyal to the Oba-elect may resort to calling the bluff of such king.
The implication of this scenario is that, the Oba will be at the mercy of the chiefs, knowing full well that his ascending to the throne was not by the ‘god’ chosen, but by the discretion of some beaded chiefs.
I hope the custodians of our culture, traditions, scholars, religious leaders in the South West states, would rise up and protect our lands and generation going into extinction.
Save our land from invaders and history distorters.
Omo Yoruba, É ronu woo!
