As the race to who emerges Senate President continues questions have been trailing the legitimacy of Senator Bukola Saraki.

Senator Saraki’s situation has not been helped by the speculation that President Muhammadu Buhari, an anti corruption crusader is against any politician vying for a position in the new government and has a case to answer with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Though once considered favourite among the contestants, Senator Saraki’s candidacy has since lost steam, as questions bothering on several allegations pertaining to him are yet to be answered making him fall amongst the unwanted elements President Buhari would hate to see in his government.

Perhaps this is the reason why Senator Ahmad Lawan is now considered the favourite for the job, a man with unblemished character.

Some of the questions begging for answer from Senator Saraki includes the involvement of his family in the mishandling of funds belonging to the now defunct Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria (SGBN).

Years back, specifically in 2003, when Senator Saraki’s father was the Chairman of the bank it was investigated by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), for alleged money laundering. The NDLEA was however not the only agency which investigated the bank, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), also did.

If you think the above allegation had nothing to do with Senator Saraki, perhaps the fact that as governor he was accused of embezzling his state’s local government fund will surprise you.

In 2007, reports of how Senator Saraki allegedly manipulated his way leading to the removal of his name from the corruption advisory list compiled by the EFCC for political parties  still remains legendary.

The Saraki family were also said to have influenced the appointment of former EFCC Chairman Farida Waziri, as a way of protecting themselves from the ghost of the past.

Apparently, Senator Saraki is not the kind of man who would work for the development of the country, but his personal agenda.
