Oyo Government Rubbish Supposed Emergence Of Prince Gbadegesin As Alaafin-elect

The widely reported emergence of Prince Lukman Gbadegesin as the 13th Alaafin of Oyo has been trashed by the state government.

Recall that on Wednesday, April 26, it was widely reported that Prince Gbadegesin from the Gbadegesin family had emerged Alaafin-elect.

He reportedly emerged after screening with the Oyomesi and was set to occupy the next Alaafin after the demise of Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, a year ago.

However, in an interview with Punch, the state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun disclosed that a new Alaafin had not yet emerged.

Olatunbosun dismissed the rumoured emergence of Gbadegesin as the Alaafin-elect, saying the state government had yet to approve any candidate.

Furthermore, the state commissioner explained that the government was bent on ensuring that due process was followed in the race for a new Alaafin of Oyo, adding that the public would be notified once the right candidate emerges.

“Due process must be followed; up until now, no name has been approved. The state governor, Seyi Makinde, has asked that they should go back and follow due process. Once that is done, the public will be briefed appropriately,” Olatunbosun said

The last Alaafin died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83, after reigning for 52 years.

Since his death, the throne has remained vacant.
