OKADA RESTRICTION: APC REACTS TO PDP

My attention has been drawn to the needless and inconsequential ultimatum issued to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the partial okada/marwa ban.

For starters, let me acknowledge this as a comic relief from the recent nationwide upheaval and the harmattan heat. It also speaks volumes about the lawlessness and mindlessness of the leadership of the party called PDP. It’s a known fact that law and order that will engender development has never been in their front burner of democratic governance. Just recently, their largely discredited leadership embarked on an unprecedented protest against the judgement of the highest court in the land over the Imo state governorship election. But it was convenient to praise the same court when the judgement was favorable to them.

It was therefore no surprise that they issued their empty threats to a sitting governor who merely implemented an existing law.

Lagosians in their best judgement since the advent of democracy have consistently voted the progressive party to keep at bay the hawks who have wasted our collective patrimony in the recent past.

The desperation to seek relevance is not lost on us.

While it is within their right to protest, the resort to self-help or violence should also be addressed within the confines of the law.

We commend the sensitivity of the Sanwo-Olu government to provide succour with the release of 65 buses and ordering additional 550 buses to ameliorate the challenge facing commuters.

The recent massive rehabilitation of roads across the state is also an effort in the right direction.

We call on all and sundry to go about their lawful duties, ignore needless threats and allow law enforcement agencies to handle sponsored protests if there are any. The good thing is that the sponsors are not faceless.

Governor Seyi Makinde Test Positive To Covid-19

The Governor confirmed his status in a short statement released Twitter.
“I just received my COVID-19 confirmation test result. It is POSITIVE. I am asymptomatic and will continue to self-isolate,” Makinde tweeted on Monday evening.
Further, he said: “I have designated Prof Temitope Alonge, former Chief Medical Director of the University College, Ibadan, as the Head of COVID-19 Task Force while I recover fully. Please continue to comply with all the directives from the COVID-19 Task Force. Stay home, stay safe,” he added.

Why I Closed Kastina State Land Borders-Gov. Masari

The Kastina State Governor, Aminu Masari, has explained why he closed the land borders of the state.

The governor had ordered the closure of the borders and also placed a ban on large gathering in public and religious centers in a bid to curb the possible spread of coronavirus in the state.

Explaining his action, Masari stated that movement of people into the state is strictly prohibited with effect from 6:00 am on Saturday, March 28, adding that fuel tankers and vehicles carrying food items and other essential commodities will be allowed into the state subject to screening and test at the point of entry. People are however at liberty to move within the state.

Kastina State shares borders with Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and Zamfara, and with the Republic of Niger to the north.

INSENSITIVITY: Femi Gbajabiamila-led House Of Representatives Takes Delivery Of Exotic Wonder On Wheels Amidst Global Fight Against Coronavirus

The insensitivity of Nigerian lawmakers has always been a talking point in the polity and among members of the public.

In the past, they have been frowned at for appearing to make laws that favour them, while failing to enforce those that seem mass-orientated.

The recent acquisition of state of the art cars for themselves at a time that the world is literally mourning countless deaths from the coronavirus pandemic is an all time low for the Gbajabiamila-led House of Representatives.

As if oblivious of happening in the world, the lawmakers threw caution to the wind, embarking on an acquisition of  400 units of 2020 Toyota Camry car tagged utility vehicle or official cars.

Chairman of the Committee on House Services, Wale Raji, who confirmed delivery of the cars declined to respond to further enquiries.

However, findings revealed that not less than 400 units of the V6 Limited Edition variant of the car was purchased for members of the House of Representatives at an undisclosed rate.

Further findings on the website of Toyota revealed that each of the vehicles  depending on the variant, has a price tag of between US$25,000 to US $35,000, excluding the cost of shipping and custom duties, which is said to be about 100 per cent of the actual cost of each unit.

Those with higher specification could cost in the following range: XLE at $29,455, XLE V6 at $34,580, XSE at $30,005 and XSE V6 at $35,130.

As you read, the cars some of which have been allocated are packed at different parking lots within the National Assembly Complex, true to a resolution reached at a sitting by the legislators in an executive (closed-door) session on February 5,  during which they resolved to purchase the cars.

The cars, which originally belongs to the National Assembly, are usually auctioned to the lawmakers after four years.

Already, about 14 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado sports utility vehicles have already been handed out to presiding as well as other principal officers and chairmen of select House committees.

Giving a breakdown of how the vehicles are shared, a member of the House, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said, the 400 saloon cars would be allocated to each of the 360 members and some top management staff, Chiefs of Staff to the (two) presiding officers as well as some of their special advisers and assistants.

The source said, “I was told 100 have already arrived and they are sharing them to new members who are not chairmen and deputy chairmen (of committees). The next batch will be for returning (ranking) members who are neither chairmen nor deputy chairmen. The last batch will go to ranking member with appointments.”

The Committee on House Services and the National Assembly Management, led by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, had constituted a joint committee to oversee the acquisition, verification and distribution to the lawmakers.

The Committee on House Services, which also exists in the Senate, serves as the protocol and welfare department.

The joint committee was set up as some members had alleged that the National Assembly had become a “dumping ground” for smuggled and refurbished automobile.
