A detour inspired by a good motive is a positive one. However, a negative detour can leave an indelible mark on the career of even the best lawmaker.
Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), might not know this.
Respected for his spick and span disposition to matters that directly or indirectly affect Lagosians, Obasa’s role at ensuring that outgone governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, utilised the resources of the state judiciously remains legendary.
However, all that came to nothing recently when under his leadership a 16-member ad hoc committee set up to screen Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commissioner-nominees failed to show utmost transparency in the execution of their responsibility.
The committee headed by Rotimi Abiru, a fourth-term lawmaker representing Shomolu Constituency II, surprised Lagosian with the confirmation of Abolaji Dada, a woman who couldn’t show any certificate during her screening.
Dada is popular in the LAHA as the Commissioner-nominee without a certificate. Today, she is the Commissioner of Women Affair and Poverty Alleviation.
