LAGOS OPEN FOR FOREIGN INVESTMENT, SANWO-OLU TELLS DUTCH ENVOY

Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lagos, Mr. Jan Van Weijen, assumed duty on Monday with a courtesy visit on Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The visit, the envoy said, was to officially inform the Governor of the upcoming visit of the Netherlands Prime Minister to Nigeria in November for bilateral meeting, noting that Lagos would be one of the places the visiting Dutch leader would stop.

Van Weijen said it was necessary to meet Lagos Governor ahead to discuss cooperation between the Netherland and Lagos on areas of mutual interests, which include inland waterway administration, intermodal transportation and efficient public health services.

Sanwo-Olu mulled partnership with the Dutch country, given that Lagos shared common realities with Amsterdam – the Netherlands’ most populous city and capital.

Like Amsterdam, the Governor said Lagos is 5 metres above the sea level, noting the State had started studying the model used by the Netherlands to bring about solution to transportation on its waterways. He said his government was looking forward to activate collaborations that could bring about Foreign Direct Investment in Lagos to boost capacity of transportation in the State.

He said: “Netherlands is beautiful country that has preserved its legacy in innovative governance over the decades. It is not out of place for Lagos, as a big city in Nigeria and African, to learn from the Amsterdam examples, given common realities we share. Nature has endowed both cities, but these endowments must not be burden. This is why we must take the opportunity to discuss cooperation and partnership.

“We will be working with your team. We will be planning further engagement to ensure that our partnership is mutually beneficial and rewarding to both countries and to our citizens. We are open for business and open to have a conversation around Lagos development and to make it a great and a megacity than what it is today.”

Van Weijen said the Netherlands government was ready to partner with Lagos in delivering the key objectives in the six pillars of development programmes of the Sanwo-Olu administration known as Project T.H.E.M.E.S.

He said: “I will like to officially inform you of the visit of Prime Minister of the Netherlands to Lagos State and Abuja, which is coming up at the end of November. We will be showcasing our cooperation with Lagos and consolidating on the progress we shared for more investment drive.

“We are looking at cooperation in transportation, exploring the Lagos waterways to alleviate the pain of road transportation. Netherlands has achieved much progress in this area; we request Lagos to study the solution we proffered in order to solve its transportation problems. Lagos is the city for the next millennium. Given our interest Project T.H.E.M.E.S. of the Lagos Government, we have excellent opportunities to mutually benefit from cooperation, which will also get the Dutch business involved in regenerating the metropolis of Lagos.

Mr Weijen was accompanied on the visit by Deputy Consul-General, Mr Ayinole’ Kohndou, and Adviser on Economy, Trade and Investment Affairs, Ms. Sonia Fajusigbe.

Outrage: Seun Onigbinde Resigns

Seun Onigbinde, the Chief Executive Officer of BudgIT, has resigned  his appointment from the government of President Muhhamadu Buhari.

Onigbinde was appointed the technical adviser at the Federal ministry of budget and national planning.

A strong critic of the Buhari government, his appointment has however been heavily criticised.

Explaining the reason behind his resignation, Onigbinde said:

” It is clear that recent media reports about my appointment have created a complex narrative, which I believe would engender an atmosphere of mistrust, as I planned to proceed.

“Upon further reflections on the furore that has been generated by my new role as the Technical Adviser to the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, I humbly resign the appointment.

“I am very grateful to the Honourable Minister, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, for believing in my expertise and I also thank everyone who sent his or her congratulations to me in the short period. According to Onigbinde,  he expected criticisms following his appointment but did not know it would be this much.

Drunk Police Officer Stabs Nine People In Ondo State

At least ninu people were allegedly stabbed at a club in Akure, Ondo State by a drunk policeman.

The policeman, attached to Area Commander’s office, Akure, allegedly stabbed the victims who were said to be young men at a popular club located at Alagbaka, GRA , Akure, during a brawl that ensued among them.

Eyewitnesses said the policeman who was reportedly drunk, started harassing the victims who had come to relax at the club.

Trouble started when the policeman began pestering and harassing one of the victims.

According to reports, it was so clear that he (Orisadare) was so drunk and was already becoming something else at the club.

“He won’t just listen to those trying to tell him to take things easy. It got to a point that things went awry as he started attacking everyone he could lay his hands on. In total, he stabbed nine people before he could be overpowered,” the source said.

Another source said some of the victims of the attack were currently receiving treatment in various hospitals in Akure, while some were in critical condition.  However, there was no loss of life in the incident.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and stated that everyone involved was engaged in a brawl. He also disclosed that the alleged policeman was also injured in the fight and had been taken to the hospital.

“There was a fight between the policeman and the boys, but we have started investigation into matter. All those involved in the brawl are already in the hospital receiving treatment. But if at the end of the day we find our man culpable, we will deal with him because we don’t tolerate indiscipline in this Command.”

Police Raid New Afrika Shrine***Arrest 28 Miscreants

Not less than 28 miscreants were arrested by policemen attached to the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences  at the New Afrika Shrine.

Another 15 illegal street traders were also arrested at various locations around Afrika Shrine, Alausa, Ikeja.

This much was disclosed in a statement by the Chairman of the taskforce, Olayinka Egbeyemi.

Egbeyemi said that the raid was necessary due to the nefarious acts within the vicinity of the Afrika Shrine which presented negative image to tourists and residents of Lagos.

“Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, over the weekend, raided all streets within Central Business District including surroundings of the ‘African Shrine,’ Alausa, Ikeja.

“The enforcement operations became imperative following complaints from members of the public about the criminal activities of miscreants and environmental nuisance of illegal street traders around the Shrine,” he said.

According to the chairman, the night operation was carried out around spots where drugs like Tramadol, Codeine, Skunk, Marijuana, Illegal liquor and assorted food are sold.

“These consumable and non-consumable items are freely sold on the streets in defiance of security agencies and government authority,” he said.

Egbeyemi maintained that the enforcement operations would be a continuous exercise in line with the vision of the present administration to rid the state of street urchins and criminals.
