Junior Pope: Operation On To Rescue Three Missing Persons, NIWA Boss Says

A search and rescue operation is ongoing to recover the remains of three crew members of a movie production team who died in the ill-fated Wednesday, April 10 boat mishap that led to the death of Nollywood actor, John Paul Odobwido popularly known as Junior Pope.

This disclosure was made by Suleiman Nicholas, the Area manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

Speaking in an interview, he stated that the crew and cast in the boat that capsized were twelve in number, adding that seven of the victims were rescued alive, two were recovered dead and three are still missing. Nicholas added that out of the three missing, two are female, while one is male.

According to him, NIWA officials alongside Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and Marine Police are currently at the scene of the incident in Akpaka Area of Onitsha and Nsugbe, conducting rescue and recovery activities, with the men of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and Marine Police.

The NIWA boss stated that contrary to the information that the incident happened in River Anam in Anambra West Local Government Area, Anambra State, it took place at Akpaka Area a suburb of Onitsha and Nsugbe Anambra East Local Government Area while the team were on their way to Anam.

“Whatever you will get now as the cause of the incident may not be accurate, we are waiting for the report from my men who are at the scene of the incident, my men are on the water now to recover the remaining three missing victims,” he responded to questions regarding the cause of the accident.
