The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that the rising number of COVID-19 cases among persons of authority is becoming worrisome.

This concern was expressed by the federal government through the Presidential Task Force (PTF), on COVID-19 led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

At a press briefing by the PTF on Monday, July 6, Mustapha described the situation as a threat to national security and governance.

The SGF charged all Nigerians to be vigilant, adding that recent developments had confirmed that COVID-19 does not discriminate or respect positions.

‘‘Of recent, we have witnessed a high rate of positive cases especially among people in authority. This has a direct impact on the governance and security of our nation.

‘‘We urge that vigilance and care should be exhibited by all Nigerians irrespective of status. This virus does not discriminate and the PTF shall keep sustaining its sensitization messaging,’’ he said.

Mustapha added that the PTF had recently met with the heads of security and defence agencies to review and chart a new course, highlighting the global health, socio-economic and security challenges triggered by the pandemic.

According to him, Nigeria must continue to evolve new strategies peculiar to her environment while working within global prescriptions.

Recall that Dr. Osagie Ehanire, Nigeria’s minister of health, had earlier expressed his concerns about the impact and effect of COVID-19 on its citizens. Ehanire said this when he welcomed the new World Health Organisation (WHO), Representative to Nigeria, Dr Walter Mulombo, in his office.

Experts say Nigeria’s coronavirus cases are still low due to low testing numbers but with high positive rate percentage, the country will surpass 100,000 cases when more testing is done.
