Extortion: Lagos Commercial Bus Driver’s Protest Witness Partial Compliance

Published

The seven-day protest embarked on by commercial bus drivers in Lagos State under the Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria (JDWAN), appears to have witnessed a low compliance.

This is as commercial bus drivers especially the smaller white buses popular as Korope were seen going on their businesses when our reporter visited select areas of Ibeju Lekki Local Government, Lagos State.

Other commercial bus drivers were also spotted on the road picking passengers from one destination to the other.

Though buses were also spotted strategically parked at locations such as Bogije, Igondo, and Eleko Junction bust stops in compliance with the protest, transport union officials were spotted at the popular School Gate Bus Stop in Ibeju Lekki Local Government, as they formed an enforcement team to ensure that motorists adhere to the protest.

Initially thought to be successful with commuters getting to bus stops to find no bus on the road, leading to a heavy flow of human traffic, with some people walking to their destination, the situation soon gave way as more motorists defied the enforcement team, embarking on their daily routine.

Recall that the drivers had threatened to withdraw their service starting from Monday, October 31, 2022, citing massive extortion of their members by urchins.

The drivers cited alleged multiple and excessive extortion of their members by the management of parks and garages in the state, as well as those attached to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers Association Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
