The last couple of months have seen Akinwunmi Adeshina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), swimming the proverbial seven seas and seven oceans.

Accused of several misdeeds including corruption at the AfDB, Adeshina initially scaled through the huddle having been cleared by an internal review of the bank’s ethics committee.

However, like a hydra snake bent on eliminating its prey, his detractors soon returned chanting war songs in their desperate bid to taint and pull down the amiable banker who is set to be re-elected for another five-year term in August.

Adeshina has however remained resolute in his denial of the accusations against him, saying they were aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

The finicky dresser found solace in an independent panel which recently cleared him of all allegations.

Consisting of individuals of high integrity such as Ireland’s ex-President Mary Robinson, Gambian Chief Justice Hassan Jallow, and Leonard McCarthy, formerly the World Bank’s integrity vice-president, the trio returned a not guilty verdict for Adeshina.

The verdict thus sets the stage for Adeshina’s re-election as the president of the bank with 53 African members and 24 none African members.
