The 2023 edition of the BET Hip Hop Awards was held at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on Tuesday night, October 10,

Popular rapper, Kendrick Lamar topped the winners list, winning four prizes, as he swept every category he was nominated in.

Lemar won Hip Hop Artiste of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, and Video Director of the Year, alongside his collaborator Dave Free.

Interestingly, no Nigerian artiste went home with any award. African Giant and Grammy Award artiste, Burna Boy who was nominated in the Hip Hop Artist of the Year category along with the likes of 21 Savage, Cardi B, Drake, Glorilla, Lil Uzi Vert, and J. Cole was floored by Kendrick Lamar.

Burna Boy just could not fly as his  Song of the Year nomination for “Sittin’ On Top Of The World,” featuring 21 Savage was not good enough for the award of the category. Burna Boy lost to Lil Uzi Vert.

The Nigerian artiste also could not win Hip Hop Video of the Year category with Sittin’ On Top Of The World.”

The Best Collaboration category where he was again nominated proved elusive as the award was bagged by Lil Durk feat. J. Cole with the song “All My Life”.

Burna Boy could also not win the Lyricist of the Year category nor could he win the award for the Best Live Performer category. He also failed to win the Hustler of the Year category, an award that went to 50 Cent.

Hosted by Fat Joe, Lil Uzi Vert, and Metro Boomin tied with two wins each, and Lil Durk and J. Cole for their collaboration on “All My Life.”

Bronx native Ice Spice was crowned this year’s “Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist,” while Blak Sherif won the “Best International Flow” award.

Superstar producers and “Verzuz” founders Swizz Beatz and Timbaland accepted the “Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award” for their cultural contributions to the genre. The pair later presented hip-hop pioneer Marley Marl with the “I Am Hip Hop Award.”
