Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.

The above words of Betty Friedan are indeed better appreciated by elder statesman and former Head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan.

In recent times, Shonekan has not really being a public figure, as he has been enjoying his old age peacefully.

However, on Sunday, May 8, he had reasons to be celebrated, as he clocked 80 years on the face of earth.

Shonekan’s birthday was marked with a Thanksgiving Service at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos.
Attendees included notable names such as Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun; his wife Olufunsho Amosun; former military head of state, Yakubu Gowon and his wife among other guests.
A British-trained Nigerian lawyer, chieftain, Shonekan would be remembered for his role as the interim president of Nigeria.
Shonekan’s transitional administration only lasted three months, as a palace coup led by General Sani Abacha forcefully dismantled the remaining democratic institutions and brought the government back under military control on 17 November 1993.
