The Adamawa State government has banned the operations of Professional Hunters Association of Nigeria (PHAN), citing abuse of power.
The ban cuts across the 21 Local Government Areas of the State.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri approved the ban on Monday, December 6, following reports of abuse of power.
In a statement released by the Governor’s Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, it was stated that the ban decision was taken over abuse of the rules of engagement and lack of regard to the traditional institution and security agencies by the hunters, especially in five LGAs namely, Demsa, Numan, Lamurde, Guyuk, and Shelleng.
Further, Fintiri directed security agencies to ensure that the proscribed group adhere to the decision, adding that the activities of the hunters could cause public disturbance.
“The operations and activities of the association in the five local governments have become a source of concern and insecurity, instead of the security it is fashioned to provide.
“More worrisome is the fact that the association operates independently of any security organisation in the five Local Government areas, thereby giving room for suspicion of their motive and intentions especially that they operate in uniforms of our security agencies and at odd hours.
“I urge security agencies and the traditional institution to collaborate and ensure that peace is maintained across the State before, during and after the Yuletide and new year festivities”.
