The dirty game of politics is not for those with faint hearts, at least not in Nigeria.
One woman who seems to have found this out is Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of erstwhile Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo.
Once a commissioner and then a senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Red Chamber, the lawmaker lost it politically in 2011 when she failed to return to the Senate after she was defeated by Olugbenga Onaolapo Obadara of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Since then, Obasanjo has been off the political radar until recently, when she declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasanjo made the declaration during an interview on Segun Odegbami’s Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM, monitored in Abeokuta on Saturday.
Confirming her return to active politics, Obasanjo is aiming really high—higher than the Senate—as she revealed she is only interested in the Ogun State topmost job, the governorship.
She said, “I’m not going back to the Senate, and I’m not returning as commissioner. The only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship. We have started that journey, and we are very serious and dedicated to it.”
Obasanjo’s return to politics was largely influenced by pressure from supporters who had been mobilising for her candidacy.
“I did not bring the group together; they reached out to me about a year ago and urged me to come back,” she added.
With Obasanjo’s return to politics and her declaration to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, she automatically poses a threat to several other contenders, including Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, who currently represents Ogun West in the Senate.
