As the 2023 presidential election draws nearer, certain northern governors are campaigning earnestly for a southern president.
Leading the pack in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) is Governor Nasiru El-Rufai of Kaduna State and Babagana Zulum of Borno State.
In the past months, the top northern governors have been calling for the zoning of the presidential slot to the south in the spirit of fairness and justice.
It is a popular opinion that if the slot is given to the south, the ruling party would have a landslide victory in the 2023 general election since it is being speculated that former vice president and PDP’s presidential candidate in 2029, Atiku Abubakar, may also be picked as the party’s presidential candidate.
Recall that Governor El-Rufai and some northern leaders within APC have declared their support for the south to produce President Buhari’s successor in 2023.
