Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has charged politicians from northern Nigeria to shelve their presidential ambitions until 2031.

Akume emphasized the need to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration through its full course.

He spoke at a two-day interactive session in Kaduna on Tuesday, July 29,  themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity”.

Akume said: “Tinubu promised impartiality in governance, and he has upheld that promise without fail,”  Akume said.

He emphasized the need to encourage effective leadership rather than disrupt it with early political ambition.

“There is a lot of misinformation in the media, but Tinubu has strengthened national security, revitalized agriculture, reduced food prices, and improved infrastructure.” he added.

Furthermore, he noted that the president has positively touched all parts of the country. The removal of fuel subsidy has provided subnational governments with more resources for impactful projects and democratic dividends.

Highlighting northern involvement in governance, Akume said: “Tinubu has appointed many northerners to key positions, and they are performing well. The claim that the north is being marginalized is unfounded.”

Akume encouraged northern politicians to focus on national development rather than personal ambition.

“With what has been achieved in just over two years, patriotic politicians should wait until 2031. 2027 should not be in your minds—Tinubu has done well and deserves to continue.”
