The saying “There is no permanent friend or enemy in politics” is a popular one.
However, there are people to whom this saying doesn’t apply to. Once they have declared you an enemy, you remain as such.
One of such people is Adams Oshiomhole, the Senator representing Edo North in the Senate.
The story of how Oshiomhole and former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, fell out is legendary. At a point in time, Obaseki was forced to jump ship and defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when Oshiomhole endorsed another candidate in Osagie Ize-Iyamu ahead of the 2020 election.
Although Obaseki went on to win the election and served his people a second time, the chord of affection between Obaseki and his former leader further weakened as they became sworn enemies.
Only recently, Oshiomhole confirmed that their position as enemies remains when he reacted to a Supreme Court judgment validating the election of Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected Edo State Governor in the last election.
A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Lawal Garba, upheld Okpebholo’s election as governor. The court ruled that the candidate of the PDP, Asue Ighodalo, failed to prove claims of over-voting, non-compliance with the Electoral Act, and other electoral irregularities.
The court held that, based on the evidence presented, Ighodalo was not elected by the majority of lawful votes cast.
Reacting to the judgment, Oshiomhole noted that Obaseki would have to come out of hiding to answer questions, insinuating a probe of the former governor’s tenure.
Before now, there had been speculation of alleged mismanagement of state funds and infrastructure projects by Obaseki. Obaseki had also been accused of embezzling N96 billion local government funds, an allegation he denied.
