A promotion by Multichoice Nigeria aimed at increasing the sales of its decoder might have just hit the rock.
This follows criticisms that have trailed the campaign.
In a bid to increase subscribers in the country, Multichoice Nigeria slashed the price of its DStv decoder by 50 per cent, dropping it from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000.
However, rather than spark excitement, it has been condemnation that has greeted the promotion with many questioning the quality of content being aired on the paytv.
Reacting to the promo on X, Esen with hande@SemiNigerian noted that the era of DStv is gone. He added that MultiChoice was encouraging people to buy decoder at N10,000, subscribe for 30,000, only to watch Jackie Chan’s 1980 movie.
“Buy decoder 10k, subscribe 30k only to watch Jackie Chan’s 1980 movie.
“The era of DSTV is gone.”
On his part, Don Wane with the handle @Alhajidon stated that MultiChoice was equating itself with MTN which people can’t do without. Lol.
“You people thought you’re MTN that people can’t do without. Lol.”
“Please advise on better alternatives. Tired of paying without watching yet it’s gone monthly,” Seyi Fasuyi with the handle @Sefash wrote.
Interestingly, this is coming barely months after Multichoice Nigeria was dragged to court by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC ) over a hike in the price of its bouquets.
Earlier this month, Nairametrics.com, a business news platform reported that Multichoice lost 1.4 million South African subscribers in two years.
The platform quoted a statement by the company blaming several factors, including high inflation, power grid collapse, and fuel scarcity, for the loss.
According to Multichoice, Nigeria accounted for 77 per cent of the subscriber loss recorded across its Rest of Africa (RoA) operations between 2023 and 2025.
