I Went Into Depression After Shooting Dagrin’s Biopic-Ope Banwo

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), of Stingomania Entertainment, Dr. Ope Banwo has revealed how he went into depression after shooting “Ghetto Dreamz”, a movie based on the life and times of late Nigerian rapper, Dagrin.

Recall that Dagrin, a notable rapper who was famous for songs such as “Pon Pon Pon”, “Champion Remix”, “Kabakaba”,  and “Erekere” among several others passed on in an auto accident while in his prime.

Banwo who recently reflected on  Omotola Jelade-Ekehinde’s frustrations on the crushing charges and taxes swallowing up movie revenue in Nigerian cinemas also touched on his cinema release experience from shooting the biopic of Dagrin.

He noted that he went into depression when he received his final cheque from the cinema release of the movie.

Banwo who noted that over-dependence on the Box Office often leads to the misconception that cinema income is the main revenue said: “….. I remember my shock at getting my final cheque after the successful Box Office run of my Ghetto Dreamz movie about the musician Dagrin in 2012. I went into a depression.”

The founder of Nollyflix360 and AiFlix360 added that cinema release is not a profit engine, but a promotional platform, as the profit comes elsewhere beyond Box Office tickets.

Banwo noted that you don’t go to the cinemas to make money, as you go to build brand equity, attract streaming deals, court international buyers, and signal quality. He added that the real money is in what comes BEFORE and AFTER the premiere cinema run, adding that unfortunately, this is the area of the movie business most Nollywood filmmakers still struggle with.
