Court Slams N1million Damages On FG For Disrupting RevolutionNow Protest

A court has awarded the sum of N1million as damages against the Federal Government of Nigeria (FG).
This follows a suit instituted against the FG by a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje.
In the suit, Ogungbeje accused the FG of using the police to disrupt an August 5, 2019, #RevolutionNow protest.
The lawyer had sued the FG for N500m, for using security operatives to tear-gas him and other protesters.
Reading her judgment, Justice Maureen Onyetenu of the Federal High Court in Lagos awarded the sum in favour of the lawyer. She also upheld his argument of disruption of the peaceful protest by the Federal Government through the police being “illegal, oppressive, undemocratic and unconstitutional.”
Justice Onyetenu also directed the FG to tender a public apology to the applicant in three national daily newspapers. The DSS’ argument of not being involved in the disruption of the protest was also upheld by Justice Onyetenu.
