The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has threatened legal action against popular influencer and content creator, Hazmat Adelaja, widely known as Peller, over an alleged unauthorised visit to the Benin Palace.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council accused the influencer of a “serious breach of protocol” and desecration of the palace, which it described as a sacred institution.

According to the BTC, Peller gained access to the palace on March 6, 2026, during his nationwide tour without obtaining the required approval.

“Mr Adelaja and his entourage entered the palace without the requisite permission, and their subsequent conduct caused significant embarrassment and a breach of peace within the palace grounds,” the statement read.

The council stressed that the palace is not a venue for casual visits or content creation, but the spiritual and traditional seat of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II.

Following a preliminary investigation, the BTC disclosed that disciplinary measures have already been taken against individuals linked to the incident.

It added that Peller has been invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions but has yet to honour the invitation.

“He must tender an unreserved written apology to the palace for his unauthorised access and the embarrassment caused,” the council stated.

The BTC warned that failure to comply could result in legal action, noting that security agencies have been alerted.

Reaffirming its authority, the council said it remains committed to preserving the traditions and sanctity of the Benin Kingdom, warning that attempts to undermine its institutions would not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, a chief allegedly connected to the incident has been suspended indefinitely. A palace staff member, identified as Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court.

The council also revealed that a queen implicated in the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which could lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin customs and traditions.
