2023: Ahmed Lawan Loses Bid To Return To Senate

A Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu, Yobe State has declared Bashir Machina as the candidate to represent the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 Yobe North senatorial district election.
Recall that on September 21, 2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), released final lists of presidential, senatorial and house of representatives candidates, but the space for Yobe North Senatorial District was left empty.
Also, the APC had in June held its presidential primaries with Ahmed Lawan among other aspirants losing to Tinubu.
Consequently, Lawan returned to claim the Yobe North ticket which had been earlier won by Machina, forcing the latter to seek the intervention of the to court.
Machina dragged APC, and Lawn to court praying the court to declare that the party cannot send the name of Lawan who didn’t participate in the primary election of the APC for Yobe North Senatorial District to INEC.
Machina also urged the court to direct INEC to accept and fill him as a candidate of part for Yobe North Senatorial District.
In a ruling on the matter, the court declared that Lawan is not a valid APC candidate, and declared Machina as the candidate of the APC for Yobe North Senatorial District.
