Magu’s Probe Evidence Fight Against Corruption Is Real-Presidency

The presidency has described the probe of the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu as a confirmation that its fight against corruption is real.

This much was stated in its first official statement on the suspension of Magu, as the acting chairman of the EFCC.

In a statement on Saturday, July 11, Garba Shehu, a media aide to the Nigerian president said the allegations against Magu and other several other members of his staff prompted the investigation by the presidential panel into the affairs of the commission.

He said the former acting chairman was suspended to allow a transparent and unhindered investigation into the allegations made against him according to proper procedure.

The aide noted that the EFCC does not revolve around anybody, pointing out that the agency has many capable hands that can carry out the duties of the commission effectively. He said the probe of Magu is to ensure accountability and transparency in accordance to the rule of law.

According to Shehu, Magu has been given the opportunity to defend himself and answer the allegations against him. The presidential aide also stated that Magu’s investigation is an indication that the fight against corruption is real and active. He said Magu is not immune to investigation regardless of the obvious embarrassment the current probe may appear to have caused.
