I am a perfectionist-Cynthia Morgan

Cynthia Morgan is considered the Queen of Reggae music in Nigeria. The Northside Inc artiste dwell on her romance, debut album and the crisis rocking music group P-Square in this interview with our reporter.

Is your debut album still dropping this quarter as scheduled?

The album is going to be out by summer, July or August.

It was supposed to be dropped in the first quarter, why the change?

I think I am a perfectionist and I am trying to be very into my job, into my album. Music is very personal, it is very sacred to me, so I am trying to be sure about what I am about to put out because this is just like the definition of me and myself, so I am trying to let my fans know more about me and that takes a whole lot of time and process. I am trying to bring out the right material and put out the authentic album.

You already have a couple of hit singles many would not have expected this kind of delay in your album release

Yes, but the kind of career that I am building is not like that of artistes who have two or three hit songs and put out an album. I think when my album is out you will understand what I am trying to say.

Do you think there could ever be a perfect album?

Well, to an extent. I think music is very sacred. Music is very deep, music is greater than death, it is what you pass on to generation and generation and every person would have their own ways of interpreting and your music and how they feel it. So, I think there is such thing as a good music, there is nothing that is perfect in life. Whenever you are making a record or you are dropping an album you need to leave a soul with that album because that is what is going to reach out to the earth to the people. So, I think it is better you are careful about what people should hold of you as a material, as a project, as an album. An album is a body of work; it’s not like dropping singles. It about things you want people to know about you. For people to know that you were here and you made an impact. So, an album is quite very large.

Tell us about the makeup of the album

I worked with different producers, so my album has different flavours. I pickup beat from anybody and if it is good I jump on it. If I like it I will jump on it, if there is a positive vibe around you when I am listening to it I jump on it. I am very open to my creativity. I think different people will come around and bring different energy and I should be able to work with that. I can’t put myself in a box even my producers I work with different people.

Have you found a title to the album yet?

I haven’t. I will keep that to myself.

It’s just moths to the release date

Actually, I have a title, but I will keep that to myself.

Can we think of a self title like Cynthia Morgan?

It could work, but definitely. Cynthia Morgan that word is presence, it is personality. So, I can actually think of titling my album Cynthia Morgan, but no that won’t be the title of my album.

Burna Boy was a cameo on your video titled Simatiniya, however a lot of people expected to see Patoranking because he is like the King of Reggae music in Nigeria

I and Patoranking are going to be working on something real soon, but Burna Boy is one that I respect his work too. I think a lot of people wanted it to be Burna Boy and a lot of people wanted it to be Patoranking. It’s like Burna Boy and Patoranking bring different kind of styles to the table. So, definitely I and both artistes are going to be working on something in the near future like real soon.

You also sparked a lot of intrigues with the pictures from the video of the song with Burna Boy

I was just having fun with my craft. I wasn’t trying to spark off anything with the pictures. I think people caught it and it did spark a light into people’s mind. I was just trying to put out something that I know I was excited about. It was grate and I couldn’t wait for people to see it, so I put it out there. A lot of people had speculations, but that is their opinion, that is not a definition of what we were doing. What I am all about is my music and stuffs like that. I was just having fun.

Yet you didn’t think it was necessary to clear the air when the rumour escalated?

Well, I did.

Did you?

I think so. I can’t remember, but I think so. Well, if I haven’t I am clearing the air now. I and Burna Boy are just friends, we are colleagues and that is it.

Would Burna boy fall into the description of the kind of man you would date?

I don’t know.

What kind of man would you like to date?

Music is like you are being in a relationship already. Dating someone is like being in another relationship. It’s really hard for you to handle both. So, you need someone that really understands you and can adore you ate the same time. We sing for people we don’t sing for ourselves and at that point we are leaving our flaws. These are the people who will be able to understand our flaws, I could be writing a song and I am leaving my dish on the floor because I want to be in that mood to be creative. An understanding person would help you clear the table because he appreciates what you are doing to in order to get more creative because he appreciates and supports what you do. That is why we artistes need a lot of people who love and appreciate us for what we are doing. There are people who know that when you are doing something or doing a free styling they add to the vibe, the positive energy. If they know that they are not musically inclined they would leave you to your own thing so that you can be fine and they are not a distraction because music is so sacred. This are the people you can show your flaws, you can’t show your flaws to your fans because they expect you to be perfect.

Have you found that person yet?

I can’t say. My music right now is my relationship. I can’t say if I have because in a relationship you need to be understanding as a person. Like I said these are the people you show your flaws, you can’t be ashamed around them. They know when you are crying, when you are sober and stuffs like that. So you have to be extremely careful to be sure of the person you want to get in with because you are a perfect person to your fans. Sometimes when you are really down your fans will never understand when you cannot be perfect they will never understand.

You are evading the question because it requires a yes or no answer

Well, I definitely will. I don’t know for now.

You don’t know if you have found him yet?

I don’t know. Who I have found is my music.

You seem a multidimensional lady because you cut the image of a bad girl sometimes and the next a lady, why is this?

A bad girl is not about how you look, but how smart you are or how charismatic you. How you can spark up the other person and they say this person is interesting. It’s not about what you are wearing that will make people conclude that this person is a bad girl. It is not about your attitude or your hair colour, it is about what you bring to the table. It is about how hard you music is, your personality is. Whatever I am wearing right now you can still see the fierce Cynthia Morgan in it. That is the bad girl. It is not about what I am wearing or being half naked.

You are quite a loud lady especially with your colours, why is this?

I scream presence, I scream personality, I scream being charismatic. I scream being confident. I represent all the women who can’t be themselves because they don’t know how to. I stand for those people who can’t speak; I stand for a confident woman. I stand for a vibrant woman, I stand for a woman who knows what she wants and that’s today’s woman for the future. That is the impact I want to leave. I am trying to be different because a lot of people think when you are different you are crazy, but when you are different you are a genius.

In recent times, there have being issues surrounding your label owner, Jude Okoye, will it affect your album in any way?

No not at all. My project is a Cynthia Morgan Project. Cynthia Morgan’s matter doesn’t have anything to do with other things. My boss is extremely professional.

What do you think about the supposed split of P-Square?

The only opinion I have is that they are my mentors. It is my prayer for them to come back together being the perfect duo. That is what I pray for.

Do you think that there will be a market for them if they go solo?

Well, I don’t know. I am a fan of P-Square, so if they go solo and I am going to be a fan I will be praying that they come back together. Whatever they decide because I love them I will appreciate, but I will appreciate more if they are together. There is power in unity, there is grace in unity. This is how they have being right from time.

What do you mean by this is how they have been from the beginning?

They have being the perfect duo. I call them the “big two”. That was what they were destined to be and that is why they survived and have been this successful. Whatever their choice is I will accept it with open arms, but I want my P-Square back, everybody those actually.

With the current situation do you think that is possible?

Yeah. Definitely, there is nothing impossible.
