Chocolate City founder, Audu Maikori, has slammed the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.
Maikori, who was once dragged to court by El-Rufai in 2017, over comments he made about the very controversial Southern Kaduna killings, criticised the erstwhile Governor for complaining about the manner in which security agents almost arrested him recently at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In an interview, Maikori recounted how he was also ‘’abducted” by security agents on the order of El-Rufai on February 17, 2017, when he was still governor of Kaduna State.
Then, Maikori had posted a series of Tweets about the alleged ‘killing’ of his driver’s brother and friends, who were supposed students of the Kaduna State College of Education. The story turned out to be false.
Although the music executive issued a retraction and an apology to the Kaduna State Government and the general public, he was arrested and prosecuted. After his release, the Kaduna State government orchestrated his re-arrest. The charges were later dropped against him after a full investigation was concluded.
Speaking during the interview, Maikori said El-Rufai persecuted him and did not allow the police handle the investigation when he made the wrong tweet.
‘’There is a difference between prosecution and persecution. What I went through with El-Rufai and many other persons was persecution. A governor doesn’t sit down and starts to do the job of the police. His job was to report the matter and let the police handle it and the police did.
“I was in Abuja for a week after my initial arrest on the 17th of February. I went through the process. My driver was flown into Abuja. He confessed that it was a lie. It was all on him. I was let go.
“What happened?
“The next weekend, Mallam was on social media week and he said ‘Oh, Maikori is a liar and we are going to prosecute him. We are trying to link his tweet with the possible death of certain people and if we are able to do so, you know the rest.”
How does a governor do that? The police discharged me”
Maikori argued that El-Rufai’s complaint about his arrest now is hypocritical, as he also used his position as governor to arrest people unjustly.
‘’He who comes to equity must come with clean hands. I am not saying due process should not be followed because its him. However, it is ironic that the person who oversaw one of the most tyrannical leadership in the history of Kaduna state is the same person complaining about being treated unfairly by the same system that he used” he said.
