Usman’s resignation became public knowledge in the late hours of Monday following a report by the Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO) which specialises in reporting Hajj and Umrah-related events.

“His resignation was not linked to any boardroom pressure or crisis, but driven by his desire to step aside at this time,” another source noted.

The source further noted that the former Chairman’s resignation was in the best interest of NAHCON, highlighting his decision to disengage quietly, having contributed to strengthening corporate governance and stability during his tenure.

Meanwhile, PRNigeria reports that Usman’s resignation comes amid rumours of a petition submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by members of the commission’s board, seeking his removal over allegations of misconduct and administrative infractions.

Furthermore, the media platform noted that the petition dated January 19, 2026, titled “Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Prof. Abdullahi Saleh Usman,” was  signed by 11 board members

Also, it noted that the Chairman’s resignation was confirmed on Tuesday by the Technical Assistant (Media) to the chairman, Ahmad Mu’azu, who told journalists that Prof. Usman communicated his resignation through a brief message late Monday night.

“Yes, he has resigned, but I am still waiting for him to communicate his reasons. He sent a one-line message last night informing us of his resignation. I believe a proper communication will be made this morning,” Mu’azu said.

According to PRNigeria, in the petition, the board alleged financial indiscipline, lack of transparency, and repeated instances of fund expenditures and contract awards carried out without board approval, in excess of approved budgetary limits. The board further stated that its action was preceded by prolonged internal observations and multiple attempts at corrective engagement, asserting that persistent leadership shortcomings had undermined the commission’s credibility, stability, and operational effectiveness.

It would be recalled that Usman was appointed as NAHCON chairman in 2024, by President Bola Tinubu. Meanwhile, the Presidency is yet to comment on his resignation.
