Police Arraigns Portable Over Assault, Alleged Theft

The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned controversial Nigerian singer, Habeed Okikiola, popularly known as Portable.

The singer was arraigned before a State High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, on a nine-count criminal charge bordering on assault, theft, causing harm, and resisting arrest.

Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the charges stemmed from a complaint reportedly filed by the singer’s estranged partner, Ashabi Simple.

According to the prosecution, Portable allegedly attacked Ashabi Simple alongside several police officers and other individuals who were present at the scene during the incident. The police further named other alleged victims in the case as Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi, and Ebuka Odah.

Portable was also accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at ₦12 million, allegedly belonging to one of the complainants, Ileyemi Damilola. The vehicle was said to be registered under a car dealership identified as Wally Dex Auto.

During the court proceedings, two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as prosecution witnesses, recounting details of the alleged assault. Ashabi Simple herself, however, was not present in court.

The police further alleged that Portable obstructed and assaulted a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was carrying out her official duties.

When the issue of bail was raised, the presiding judge declined to grant the singer bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer in court. The judge stressed the need to hear from the officer before making a decision on the bail application.

Portable was subsequently remanded in custody pending a fresh hearing on the bail application, which has been scheduled for January 19.

It would be recalled that Portable was earlier spotted crying in a viral video recorded while he was in police custody. The footage has since generated mixed reactions on social media.
