Six Things We Hope Not To See At AFRIMA 2016

on

The countdown to the 2016 edition of the All African Music Award (AFRIMA), is almost over with the award set to hold on Sunday, November 6, at Eko Hotel and Suits, Lagos.

www.theoctopusnews.com’s Entertainment Analyst has however itemized six major things which must not happen at the award this year.

  • Politicizing The Award: The last edition of the AFRIMA awards almost turned into a political fiasco based on the fact that former Lagos State Governor and All Progressive Congress (APC)’s chieftain Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu was an awardee. With chants of APC in the hall, one could have mistook the event for a party convention. While it is true that he who pays the piper dictates the tune, organisers must be able to separate an award from a political party gathering. This mention is necessary considering the fact that the 2016 edition is being sponsored by Lagos State.

  • Proper organisation of the hall is another important thing to consider. In the past, VVIP card holders have found themselves sitting in the space reserved for Regular, as their seat had been taken over. This situation can be sorted by simply tagging cards to seats. We hope that VVIPs won’t end up like they did last year, as most of them had to strain their necks to catch a glimpse of the screen.

  • With the award being organised in partnership with the Ministry of Information, we hope that the Honourable Minister Lai Mohammed won’t bore guests with one of his many lengthy speeches. The award is an entertainment event and shouldn’t be speech laden. Let’s have enough time to see Africa’s finest on stage.

  • Over the years, the organisers of the AFRIMA award have failed to convince us that it is not a compensatory award. Basically, almost all the entertainers who perform get to go home with an award plaque. This, we hope won’t happen this year. Come on guys, let us put some standard into this thing. Performing at the Grammy Award has its own special feeling of achievement and same should apply

  • Very importantly, we hope that dancers and backup singers won’t have to hold organisers of this year’s award hostage like last year. The picture from last year was indeed nauseating as sweaty bodies lying down on the floor of the hall begging and almost threatening an helpless Mike Dada to pay them was indeed negative Public Relations.

  • With all seriousness, we hope that this year’s award starts on time. No excuses please. You don’t have to arrange the hall and stage in front of your guests.
