Davido’s loss of the Favourite Global Star category in the recently held Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards has raised questions about the level of acceptance of African music at the international scene.

Nominated alongside North America’s Taylor Swift, Europe’s David Guetta, Latin America’s J Balvin, Australia’s Troye Sivan and Asia’s Blackpink, fans of Davido in Africa had high hopes that their representative would smile home with the award by virtue of his many hits.

Known to have collaborated with several international music stars, enjoyed international sold out concerts, it just wasn’t too much to hope for. However, Africa was held down on the day of the award as the category went to Taylor Swift.

For lovers of African music, Davido’s loss at the award confirms the fact that the continent’s music is still miles away from being accepted internationally.
