Nigerian car owners might have wasted billions of naira after a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos declared the change of plate number unconstitutional.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) had threat to impound vehicles with the old plate number effective from October 1.

However, sitting in Lagos the trail judge declared the new number plates illegal, saying it’s unconstitutional. The judge said; that it was unlawful for the commission to impose the new number plates on Nigerians, where no existing law permitted it.

The suit was filed by Emmanuel Ofoegbu, a lawyer, against FRSC after they mandated Nigerian car owners to obtain the plate number before a deadline of October 1.

Presently, it is unconfirmed if those who are yet to change their number will go on to do so or if the commission will make a refund to those who have obtain the new number.
